Each room has a different reason for storage. The living area accumulates excess amounts of pillows, blankets, remote controls, toys (if you have children), etc. Unless these items double as decor pieces in the layout, you're going to need storage to hold them. Living room storage items are baskets, console tables, ottomans, decorative bowls, etc. Baskets can be used to storage extra blankets or pillows for when you have company over.  Baskets with tops can also be used to hide all of your kids' toys.  I currently use the drawers on the console table to store mail or other small items until I have the time to sort through it all. I have a decorative on top of the table that catches everyone's car keys as they enter my home (well it actually has leftover Christmas ornaments in it at the moment).
