Decluttering 101

Raise your hand if you have clutter. It does not matter how little or how much. Clutter is clutter. Seriously, the only way you probably have absolutely no clutter is if you’re a die-hard minimalist. I have a simple system that I use to purge my junk rooms every year or month (sometimes). I use the 3 T’s: Trash, Treasure and Transfer. 1. Trash I think we all have a habit of using the line, “Well maybe I’ll need this later” or something along those lines.   You probably didn’t even know it was there which means you probably don’t need it or you replaced it so trash it.   I was decluttering my mom’s office last year when I came across a 1998 computer software disk. My mom wanted to keep it because “somebody might need it.” THROW IT AWAY! Don’t be scared to throw items in the trash. You won’t miss it. If you have clothes or shoes that are damaged or stained, trash it. Old mail, make sure it’s nothing important and then shred it or trash it. Expired food, Ew...

Living Room Storage

Each room has a different reason for storage. The living area accumulates excess amounts of pillows, blankets, remote controls, toys (if you have children), etc. Unless these items double as decor pieces in the layout, you're going to need storage to hold them. Living room storage items are baskets, console tables, ottomans, decorative bowls, etc. Baskets can be used to storage extra blankets or pillows for when you have company over.  Baskets with tops can also be used to hide all of your kids' toys.  I currently use the drawers on the console table to store mail or other small items until I have the time to sort through it all. I have a decorative on top of the table that catches everyone's car keys as they enter my home (well it actually has leftover Christmas ornaments in it at the moment). Storage ottomans can be used to store just about anything depending on its size. They are great to have especially if you're in a small space. Don’t forget that you can ...

Styling Your Dining Table

Here are my tips for decorating a beautiful dining table on a budget. I am not an expert yet, but i do think these tips could be helpful. 1. Color scheme/theme.  This first step helps you choose your tablecloth, dishes and accessories. When trying to decide on a theme for a table, think about the vibe that you want to give off. For my dining table, I wanted simple but elegant. The colors for most of my home are teal, emerald green and gold with white to balance it out. On my dining table I used green and gold accents to tie it in with my color scheme. 2. Gather dishware & table dressings . The first place you want to shop is at home. It may sound strange or funny, but it works! When redecorating, I always see what I can use that I already own. (Tip: Simply rearranging and relocating your decor pieces can save loads of money.)  Lucky for me, I found a rather expensive dining set in the garage that a previous tenant left behind.  A...

Bathroom Trash Can Makeover

Before this  makeover , my bathroom trashcan was just unappealing.  It was a burgundy color with highlights of pink and white. It did absolutely nothing for the space and it was an eyesore to look at. I decided to give my entire bathroom a makeover. That also meant that the trashcan had to go. As a way to save money, I figured I could just paint it and give it a new life. For this project you will need:   A trash can (Duh), Painter's tape, Rustoleum Coral spray paint Rustoleum Metallic  Gold spray paint Step 1 : Remove any loose dirt or dust with a damp cloth. You don’t have to use fancy products.  Just get some ole fashion soap and water.  Let it dry. Step 2 : Use the Rustoleum Coral spray paint to cover the entire trash can (inside & outside).  Make sure you follow all instructions on the can of spray paint.  Don’t forget to keep the can moving while painting so you don’t cause any  drippage . Let it sit for about 3...
